Rohnert Park introduces new financial manager | Community

Rohnert Park held a City Council meeting on November 12, 2024. The meeting began with the land acknowledgement given by Mayor Adams and the pledge of allegiance, immediately followed by a presentation to introduce Rohnert Park’s newest finance manager, Yosselyn Valencia. With a prior history of working with the city as an accountant and as a management analyst, Valencia is returning from working with the City of St. Helena for the past year and a half. The new finance manager proudly told the City Council, “I am very glad to be back working for the City of Rohnert Park. It is a pleasure to be serving again.”

The City Council unanimously passed the consent calendar, which consisted mostly of minute approvals from prior meetings, acceptance of reports, and authorizations for the city manager to execute some minor agreements with outside companies such as Schaaf & Wheeler.

Moving into the first regular agenda item, the City Council heard a report on the possibility of transferring the Golf Course Oversight Committee from being a committee under the Parks and Recreation Commission to being a City Council appointed committee, as it is the only committee that is not. The committee was originally made in 2001 by the city manager of the time, with the goal of providing direction as to what maintenance is needed for the local golf course known as Foxtail Golf Course, owned by Courseco. The entirety of the City Council agreed to proceed with the direction presented, meaning we will hopefully see an agenda item in a future meeting where they will vote to finalize this process.

The second agenda item sees Rohnert Park officially hire Betsy Howze as the city’s director of finance. Howze was, before now, the interim director of finance while the city continued to search for a permanent solution. Thankfully, Howze has decided to stay with the city and thus has had the interim status of her position removed. Howze has been serving in this position with Rohnert Park since May of last year but has over 27 years of experience working throughout Sonoma County in various accounting and managerial roles. Prior to working for Rohnert Park starting in 2014, she worked as the Deputy Director of Finance for the City of Santa Rosa. The City Council unanimously approved of authorizing an employment agreement with Betsy Howze.

After delivering reports on the many committees the members of City Council are members or liaisons of, the Rohnert Park City Council meeting was adjourned.
